Is religious belief and devotion a product of our species' evolutionary history? This is not a question about whether or not God exists, but rather are we predisposed to behave in ways that appear to be worship of people or concepts? This article is written by a pastor who makes interesting observations about such forms of behavior. He may or may not be writing in support of evolutionary theory, but even if not, he makes a good point about choosing wisely who you worship.

CW love these seeds you put out, I always have some kind of opinion, and you don't void them when I get political, or off the subject.
Somehow the conversation on your seed on "Superminds" got somewhere into this, maybe I am part to blame, [this is what I am talking about COH, some anal retentive seeders do not like that]
Hero, idol, celebrity worship and God, I also think have an evolutionary aspect in not only humans but social animal psychology as well.
Dale95 in Superminds made a statement: But, first we need to focus on learning how to life peacefully amongst ourselves / A soft-ware glitch maybe, or a narcissistic virus of sorts. For which I replied.
Or an evolutionary psychology. Our global civilization is just starting, for 100,000's of years humans and that which humans evolved from, lived in a difficult wild world, full of predatory beasties, and worse threats of famine etc. We evolved as social creatures working together in tribes, but a wolf pack like order was part of the workings or those tribes. Tribe members had to obey the chiefs and high priests, all members were of the same culture, religion etc. and those who deviated were banished, punished, forced to submit their individuality. Any one see or remember Scene Connery and Michael Cain in "The Man Who Would Be King" all tribes were at constant war with each other. This is the root of bigotry, I think. There is a good chance that people who are too different have been threats in our primordial past, something we inherently cannot forget. Also as selfish narcissism is concerned, I think in our democracy people still need to vote for their best interests [in a balanced way]. We are not total social like bees or ants, our own awareness of self prohibits that [I would like to keep it that way]. Their are too many authority driven people who worship the wealthy and powerful, just to become abused subservient peons, [and like it].
I also think there is an insecurity in us all, that reverts back to childhood, where we need a reasurring adult or guardian figure to protect and comfort us in this big bad world. If you can't get that without giving up your dignity, so what better way than to invent a God. And those who gain influence and status by being the voice of said God. Going back to civilizations and hero worship, like wolves where you have alphas, betas and deltas, so do we. Look at how our kings, queens, high priests, and popes etc. are set on pedestals, and thrones, with all their royal garb, and pomp and circumstance. In our more modern, enlightened times this still exists. Except now in our entertainers and celebrities. Liberace, KISS, and other metal, glam bands, country bands too with the rhinestones, and get up, all ties into this.
Having to get into psychology and politics, read some of the discussions between liberals and conservitive in political chat room that get into more depth than just calling each other trolls. There is something about poor and middle class conservatives that often express a need for order [understandable we need order]. They have a fearful dislike of independent thinking, and democracy as if that always leads to anarchy. In turn they respect [worship] wealth and power, even if they are brutal dictators, or mobsters like Al Capone [he was popular amongst many, and not only because he supplied booze]. Yes there are the one day they will become rich dreamers like Joe the plumber, but most I think just have that primordial need to kiss authority butt. Maybe hoping to get some scraps from the emporers table.
Liberals are no different either, although they are not impressed by wealth, they do idolize those who speek for them, and maybe do their thinking for them. Once going back to the tribe and great priests. No indignity there, not if you make them more than human and the voice of God.
